Well, last night my neighbors here in France didn't know why we were grilling out and celebrating, but we knew why. It was America's birthday. Our entire team came over last night, minus Darren who was camping, to have some burgers, sausages, hash brown casserole, grilled pineapple, and some German chocolate cake. Good stuff!
Although my neighbors don't know much about America's Independence Day, the French did fight alongside America during the Revelutionary War. Louis XVI, King of France at the time, spent a lot of money sending his military across the Atlantic Ocean to aid the American's. He did this mostly to prove to England that France was powerful. Unfortuneately, Louis liked spending money a little too much, and a few years later the people of France decided they had had enough and overthrew the monarchy. This day is now known as Bastille Day and is celebrated on the 14th of July. So, in 10 days, most of France will be in the party zone--lots of fireworks and food.
I love fireworks. I have always loved the 4th of July. I would save up and buy as many fireworks as I could. My sister and brothers would all bring their families to our house. My dad would man the grill, my mom would make the hamburger patties, my brothers would pull out the guitars, and we would enjoy each other's company until dark. When the darkness arrived then we would pull out the fireworks. ;-) Good times!!
Happy 4th of July!!
